The picture on the left shows the reason why we had to go back to Sporekrans so soon. We were there in November the previous year, check the write up.
We immediately broke up into two groups. There were the young one's who wanted to do a decent hike and did the big round tour. And then there were the elderly. We, the elderly, went upstream into the gorge crossing all the bridges and going up the ladders until climbing out. On the way we came across this strange plant, according to my book it is a mushroom, Star Stinkhorn or Aseroe rubra. It is stated as inedible, I think that is possibly nobody has tried it yet and it is not going to be me.
Once out of the abyss we took the easy way back down to the first bridge. That was enough for us and also fully satisfying. As we were coming up from the gorge the others arrived. They must have been storming around the high path.
Sunday morning I joined a small group that wanted to go up to the cave. I only went as far as the bottom. below the cave, where on a previous occasion I noticed some pieces of crockery. My aim was to have a scratch around to see what else I can find. I was not disappointed and came up with pieces of crockery, some ammunition and rusted pieces of iron that could have come from an ox-wagon. I concluded that this was a boer war hiding place for one of the local farmers.
